Alan Latourelle made a return visit with CASIOPA just before everyone decamped to the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney AUS.
As CEO of Parks Canada, Alan has been a strong advocate for research and community engagement through fora like CASIOPA and it was great to host him.
Alan’s visit was part of a class on parks & protected areas issues and trends that yet another Parks Canada legend teaches in the Department of Environment and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo.
That legend who teaches it? Doug Stewart, former Director General of Parks Canada – a person who helped expand parks and is known for better engagement with stakeholders, especially First Nations – but also someone who recognized when the process fell short of expectations and worked to improve it further.
Alan and Doug are pictured below with BES student Laura Collings – who has begun to set up a Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors club here at the University of Waterloo.
